BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College President, G. T. “Buck” Smith, announces the appointment of William R. Kiefer, a member of the Bethany College Board of Trustees, to the newly-created position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. His position began on August 22.

Kiefer, an attorney in the Wheeling office of the law firm Steptoe & Johnson PLLC and former Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Weirton Steel Corporation, will remain Of Counsel to Steptoe & Johnson.

In making the announcement, President Smith commented, “Bill Kiefer’s corporate, community and college experience equip him uniquely for this key management role at Bethany. Having served on the College’s Board of Trustees for the past five years, he is keenly aware of the issues and extraordinary opportunities before us. I am personally very grateful for his being open to this career change at this point in his professional life.”

A graduate of Bethany College in 1971, Kiefer earned a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1974. After more than 10 years in private law practice, he joined Weirton Steel, serving as a Senior Executive for more than 20 years.

He is deeply involved in numerous business and community organizations, presently serving as President of Weirton United Way and has served on the boards of Weirton Medical Center Foundation, Weirton Medical Center Corporation, Weirton Christian Center, Business Development
Corporation of the Northern Panhandle, Weirton and West Virginia Chambers of Commerce and West Virginia Independent Colleges & Universities (WVICU).

Kiefer is married to the former Maria Chaldares, also a Bethany graduate. They are the parents of three sons, Christopher, Stephen and Alex.
