BETHANY, W.Va. – Representatives of the Greek Community at Bethany College presented a check to the River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross on Wednesday, January 10, 2006 at 10 a.m. in the Renner Union Art Gallery, on the Bethany College campus.
Members of campus fraternities and sororities collected $2,000 to donate through coin drives during the last two Greek Week competitions, as well as collecting canned goods for the House of the Carpenter and toys for the Children’s Home of Wheeling. Students decided where to donate the items collected through philanthropy events and the consensus was that they wanted to assist local residents first and foremost.
Senior member of Alpha Xi Delta, Vanessa Myers said, “As members of the Greek Community, we have high ideals to uphold. I am extremely proud of our accomplishments in the philanthropic events during Greek Week. We felt that the Red Cross was the organization that could benefit the most from our fundraising efforts. We are glad that our donations will be helping out members of our surrounding community and that we can give back to the area that has fostered our growth throughout college.”
“We are extremely pleased with the participation in the charity events during Greek Week. Our students always go above and beyond to help out whenever they are needed,” said Brian Fernandes, Associate Dean of Students. “Their most recent accomplishments prove that, during a week of competition, they can come together for the common goal of helping others. I have never been more proud to have worked with a certain group of people that have given so much of themselves. The Greeks here exemplify the spirit of Bethany College and the mission of Greek Life.”
