BETHANY, W.Va. — The Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (ASJMC) announced that Bethany College professor, Patrick J. Sutherland, Ph.D., has been elected to its national executive committee.

Chairperson of the Bethany College Communication Department since 2003, Sutherland was elected to represent small programs. He will take office this August following the annual Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Convention to be held in
Washington, D.C.

“It is an honor to serve ASJMC at the national level to try to help small journalism and communication programs, such as Bethany College, to achieve excellence in our field,” said Sutherland.

The ASJMC Executive Council meets three times a year around the United States, to consider issues such as accreditation, assessment of student learning, fundraising and grant writing, and the use of new technologies in the classroom.

“Some of the goals of ASJMC as a support organization include, encouraging innovative teaching and learning techniques and to provide leadership in communication education,” stated Sutherland. “I’m grateful to Bethany College for the professional development opportunities that they provide to faculty members, such as myself.”

The Bethany College Communication Department offers study concentration areas in advertising, documentary studies, electronic media, graphic design, print journalism and public relations.
