BETHANY, W.Va. – Dr. Patrick Sutherland, Chair of the Department of Communication at Bethany College, was part of a select group of college instructors in attendance at the second annual New Media Summit for Academics. The two-day event was hosted by the Northwestern University Law School in Chicago, Ill.
“Edelman Public Relations and PR Week magazine were gracious hosts to approximately 70 academics from around the United States,” Dr. Sutherland said. “While we were there, we were able to interact with some of the top corporate leaders from all over the country and learn about the ways they employ today’s innovative communication systems and techniques.”
The summits are designed to provide an annual forum in which college instructors can meet with executives from some of the premier communication firms in the United States to share notes on advances in media-related communications. Panel discussions are also held to develop strategies enabling professors to optimize their teaching and research planning for the benefit of students studying both traditional and emerging media.
Some of the panel discussions in Chicago covered such topics as “Engaging Consumers Through Social Networks,” “Elections 2008,” “How Other Countries Are Using New Media,” “Health Industry Experimenting With New Media” and “New Media in 2012.”Panelists included top individuals from such organizations as Johnson and Johnson; YouTube, Starbucks, The Wall Street Journal, The International Freedom Center, Forrester Research and the John D. and Catherine T.
