The event, an annual tradition at the 170-year-old College, will begin at 11 a.m. in historic Commencement Hall in Old Main.

“Not only has Bob earned a remarkable international reputation for his many business achievements, he is also well-known for his extraordinary spirit of philanthropy,” stated Bethany College President Dr. Scott D. Miller. “He consistently works on a variety of fronts to further education, creating life-changing opportunities for Bethany students and individuals throughout the world. It is an honor to welcome him back to campus to address our students and provide another example of the global impact a Bethany education can foster.”

McCann’s post at UBS Wealth Management Americas involves the oversight of approximately 8,000 financial advisors across the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada. Before joining UBS, McCann worked for Merrill Lynch & Company for 26 years, most recently as vice chairman and president of the Global Wealth Management Group.

After receiving his undergraduate degree in economics from Bethany in 1980, McCann went on to earn his M.B.A. from the Neeley School of Business of Texas Christian University (TCU). He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

McCann serves as vice chair and treasurer of Bethany’s Board of Trustees and is a director of the American Ireland Fund. He was also appointed chairman of the U.S. – NI Mentorship Program Steering Committee in the U.S. In addition, he works as a member of the Advisory Board of No Greater Sacrifice, an organization committed to supporting the educational needs of the families of service members who have fallen in the line of duty or been seriously wounded while providing service in the global war on terror.

McCann’s experience with TCU’s Educational Investment Fund inspired him to establish the McCann Family Student Investment Fund at Bethany. The fund is the first of its kind in West Virginia and one of only a handful in small colleges across the nation.

A portion of the proceeds from the student fund are directed toward Bethany’s McCann Learning Center, also created by McCann. The center was designed to enhance the learning skills of all students, including students with disabilities, and to support the heightened performance of faculty and staff.

Preceding McCann’s remarks, Miller will present him with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

The Fall Convocation is an annual event at Bethany, welcoming students to campus and bringing the entire College community together to celebrate the start of a new academic year. In addition to McCann’s address, the College will recognize high academic achievers from the spring semester and announce the recipient of several awards, including the Richard B. Kenney Freshman Leadership Award, presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, leadership and character at Bethany.

Bethany College is a small college of national distinction located on a picturesque and historic 1,300-acre campus in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. Founded in 1840, Bethany is the state’s oldest private college.
