Bethany, WV – Bethany College’s President Dr. Scott D. Miller was honored for his longtime leadership of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) New Presidents Program at a dinner in San Diego Saturday night.
Dr. Richard Ekman, President of Washington, D.C. –based CIC, in acknowledging Dr. Miller's career-long dedication to CIC, presented him with a plaque recognizing his 15 years as Chair of the New Presidents Program (NPP). Dr. Miller has been on the faculty of the NPP for 19 years.
Founded in 1956, the Council of Independent Colleges is the national organization that focuses on providing services to leaders of independent colleges and universities. It now serves 660 independent colleges and universities, 55 national, state and regional affiliate organizations and 32 state associations. Over 800 new presidents have taken part in the NPP, now in its 27th year, which examines challenges and issues that new presidents face, and offers practical strategies for campus CEO's.
Respected as one of the most entrepreneurial higher education executives in America, Dr. Miller is in his 24th year as a college president. He is in his eighth year as President and M.M. Cochran Professor of Leadership Studies at Bethany College, a nationally ranked liberal arts institution and West Virginia's oldest degree-granting college or university. He was previously President of Wesley College and Lincoln Memorial University. A former officer and member of the CIC Board of Directors, he is Chair of the Board of Directors of Academic Search, Inc., and the Independent College Enterprise. He is completing a two-year term this week as Chair of The Council of Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and is Vice Chair of the American Academic Leadership Institute.
A highly sought presenter, mentor and author on higher-education topics including financial sustainability and presidential performance for national conferences and trade journals, Dr. Miller’s op-eds are carried in “The Huffington Post” and collected on his blog page (“Dialogue”) and on the Bethany College website (www.bethanywv.edu). He is a regular columnist for “College Planning and Management,” “Enrollment Manager,” and “The State Journal,” and is the executive editor of “Presidential Perspectives” (www.presidentialperspectives.org), a best-practices thought series for college and university presidents that has resulted in nine books. He has co-published two volumes of "President to President: Views on Technology in Higher Education."
He has written hundreds of articles for scholarly journals, many with his long-time co-author, Dr. Marylouise Fennell, a former college president and current senior counsel for the Council of Independent Colleges (www.hyatt-fennell.com/pages/articles.html). Dr. Miller and Dr. Fennell led the New Presidents Program together for 12 years.
