Dr. Elizabeth Hull Selected by Council of Independent Colleges to Attend Special Seminar on Teaching European Art

BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College’s Dr. Elizabeth Hull has been selected by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to participate in a special week-long seminar on Teaching Pre-Modern European Art in Context. The seminar will be hosted at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia, and runs from June 20-24.

Hull, Dr. Robert L. Martin Chair in English Literature and Professor of English, will join one of 21 faculty members nationwide in exploring how viewers and listeners experience art and music in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Titled “Sight and Sound in Renaissance and Baroque Europe [c. 1300 – 1700],” the seminar aims to strengthen the teaching of art history to undergraduates around the world.

“Strengthening the teaching of art history at colleges and universities – many of which have limited faculty resources in art history – is critical,” CIC President Richard Ekman said. “The seminar will have significant value for the faculty members who participate, the colleagues with whom they will share their new knowledge and the students who enroll in their courses.”

Those in attendance at the seminar will read and discuss scholarly articles and original texts from the period to prepare themselves for direct encounters with European art in the museum, and with live and recorded performances of early music. Hull and other faculty members will have the opportunity to share educational strategies for visual analysis, conversation, slow looking and digital interpretation.

Hull received her B.A. from Kirkland College and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
