Ghastly Tale Promises Halloween Fun on Bethany Campus

pillowman.jpgBETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College Theatre continues its 2017-18 Season with its production of Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman.

Performances will be held October 26-28 at 8 p.m. and October 29 at 2 p.m. in the Wailes Theatre, Steinman Hall on the Bethany College campus.

This darkly comic, twisted, tale has been described as playwright and screenwriter McDonagh’s bravest work. His other works include Beauty Queen of of Lenane, Cripple of Inishman, In Bruges, andthe soon-to-be-released Three Billboards featuring Bethany’s own Oscar/Tony/Emmy award winning Fran McDormand.

In the opening scene, a good cop (Mike Lyons of Beaver Falls, PA) and a bad cop (Kerry Kerr of Lawrenceville, GA) interrogate Katurian, (Max Hardt of Bethany, WV) a young writer, about a series of child murders that bear strong similarities to the stories he’s written. Also in custody is Katurian’s brain-damaged brother Michal (Elias Stebbins of Washington, PA).  The brothers have both been childhood victims of a bizarre artistic experiment by their parents (Katie Campbell of Emmitsburg, MD and Jess Donato of Butler, PA) designed to instill genius in Katurian.  As the plot unfolds, several of Katurian’s scary-sweet stories are enacted by the parents and a child (Caitlin Hanna of Washington, PA).

A number of disturbing images blur the line between fantasy and reality and cleverly provokes examination of the notion of creativity itself.

The Pillowman is decidedly not family-friendly as it unflinchingly depicts murder, suicide, beheading, torture, crucifixion and live burial. But for adult audiences looking for some wicked Halloween fun, Pillowman delivers.

Limited seating is available, so reservations are strongly recommended by calling 304.829.7124.

Admission to the play is free but donations are gladly accepted. Additionally, Bethany College Theatre is using this event as a collection point for care items for Brookeplace Family Connections in Weirton.
