Nov. 8 - BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany College swimming & diving teams welcomed three different schools to the John J. Knight Natatorium on Saturday. The Bison men picked up three victories while the women went 2-1 on the day as the Green & White hosted Penn State - Altoona, Baldwin Wallace University and Defiance College.
The Bison men's team picked up three wins, as the meet was scored as three dual contests. The Bison defeated PSU-Altoona 129-79; upended Baldwin Wallace, 128-91 and took down Defiance, 168-15. Brandon Martell (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) was the big individual winner for the Bison, as he took first place in both the one-meter (193.05) and three-meter (144.05) dives. The other individual winner for the men was Cody Hussey (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), who continued the hot start to his season as he captured the 500 meter freestyle with a time of 5:10.89. He also notched a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:45.73).
The Bison also captured first place in the 200-yard medley realy. The team of Jake Collas (South Park, Pa./South Park), Kevin Bakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), Craig Starks (Milwaukee, Wisc./Rufus King International) and Jeremy Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) touched first with a time of 1:44.42.
Other notable performances for the men included Collas and Starr, who both notched two second-place finishes. Collas touched second in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:15.83) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.98), while Starr finished second in both the 50 (22.85) and 100 (52.52) freestyle races.
On the women's side, the Bison upended both Penn State-Altoona (120-86) and Defiance (119-52), but fell, 110-98, to Baldwin Wallace.
Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando) was the top swimmer for the Green & White as she placed first in all three of her individual swims. In her victory in the 50 freestyle, Baker captured the Bethany record, finishing with a time of 25.14, .04 seconds better than her previous school mark of 25.18 which she set last season. She also added first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (55.72) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.70).
Christine Pray (Canton, Mich./Canton) also performed well on the day, notching a victory in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of (11.35.08). She also notched two, second-place finishes in the 500 free (5:41.87) and the 200 free (2:09.73). Alaina Geer (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) also notched a victory, capturing a first-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a 1:07.52.
The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Steubenville, Ohio for a tri-meet with Franciscan University and Cabrini. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
