Oct. 7 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior men’s soccer player Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom/Maidstone) and sophomore women’s soccer player Taylor Sasak (Berea, Ohio/Berea) have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Sasak earned the honors after her performance against Waynesburg University on October 3rd. The sophomore totaled 12 saves in the contest, making it the eighth time this season she has recorded double-digit saves in a game. Sasak leads the President’s Athletic Conference in saves and ranks 12th in the nation for all of Division III. She is averaging a career-best 11.89 stops in net for Bethany, and she has played all 840 minutes for the Bison in goal this year.
Appleby continued his solid play in between the pipes for the Green & White. The junior goaltender helped the Bison play to a 1-1 tie against Waynesburg University on October 3rd. After an early goal from well outside the box found its way into the back of the net, Appleby and the Bison defense held the Yellow Jackets scoreless for 114 minutes. Appleby collected six saves and moved to 2-1-1 on the season, including 2-0-1 at home. He has allowed just nine goals for a 1.52 goals allowed average and he leads the Bison in saves (37) and save percentage (.804).
Other nominees for the SAAC Athletes of the Week included soccer forward Abdullahi Abdullahi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), and football players Nadim Raddar (Laurel, Md./Old Mill) and Eric Blinn (Beaver, Pa./Western Beaver) for the men. For the women, the other nominees included tennis freshman Pia Hager (Stuttgart, Germany), volleyball player Arielle Sanders (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) and field hockey sophomore Bailey Boardman (La Verne, Calif./Bonita).
