Nov. 4 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior diver Brandon Martell (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) and sophomore volleyball standout, Dylana McKenzie (Hopewell, Ohio /West Muskingum) have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Martell had a special day at the Westminster dual-match, winning both the 1 and 3 meter diving events. In the 3-meter dive, Martell was able to break the Bison record, posting a score of 226.20. The previous record was set in 1972 by Richard Siconolfi with a score of 217. His day didn’t end there, as he also grabbed first-place honors in the 1-meter dive with a score of 233.15.
McKenzie became the fifth Bison in Bethany history to eclipse 400 kills in a season as she totaled 61 kills in four matches last week. McKenzie posted at least 12 kills in each match, including a career-high 23 kills in a 3-1 victory over Westminster College, finishing the week hitting .223. With the totals, McKenzie completed the year with 401 total kills, joining her sister Dakota in the 400-kill club this season.
Others considered for the award on the men’s side included junior football standouts Eric Blinn (Beaver, Pa./Western Beaver) and Donavan Hayden (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern), as well as freshman soccer player Ryan Power (Sydney, Australia/Lisarow). Other women were senior cross country runner Rhianna Petrone (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), junior field hockey athlete Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional), junior diver Haley Ekaitis (Pittsburgh, Pa./McKeesport ) and freshman soccer standout Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke).
