Sept. 9 – BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that freshman Jordan Castro and senior T.J. Solomon have been named the Bethany SAAC Student-Athletes of the Week.
In his first race for the Bison, Castro (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Leilehua) turned in his best time to date at the Doug Watts Gala at Edinboro University. Castro finished in 26:48.7, which was good for 17th place overall.
Castro’s performance earned him President’s Athletic Conference Runner of the Week honors. The award marked the first of Castro’s career. The Hawaii native was the first Bethany runner to win the award since Ryan Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) in 2013. The freshman posted the fastest time of any runner in the conference and was the first Division III athlete to cross the finish line in the meet.
Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) helped get the Bethany College field hockey team off to their best start since the program's reboot in 2012. The senior started off the 2015 campaign with two goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Bethany a 3-2 win over Wooster.
Solomon picked up right where she left in the second game, recording her second multi-goal game of the season and adding another assist in a 5-1 victory against Cedar Crest College. The forward totaled 15 shots in three games this week, with 14 of those coming on goal. Her four goals and two assists for ten total points lead the Bison in all three categories.
Other SAAC Athlete of the Week nominees included football players Donavan Hayden (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and Aaron Frye (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski) for the men. For the women, sophomore soccer forward Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke), freshman tennis player Pia Hager (Stuttgart, Germany), and Bison volleyball player Dakota McKenzie (Hopewell, Ohio/West Muskingum) all received nominations.
