Cheyne Stresky/Hayley Holenka Honored as Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Month

Feb. 3 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that men’s swimming & diving freshman Cheyne Stresky (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) and women’s basketball junior Hayley Holenka (Shadyside, Ohio/Shadyside) have been selected as the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the month for January.

Stresky continued his dominating freshman campaign throughout the opening month of 2016. Stresky earned at least first-place finishes in all five meets this month, breaking at least one school record in the last four.

The Oxford, Mich. native set both the 50-yard freestyle (21.73) and 100-yard backstroke in a tri-meet with Franciscan and Pitt-Bradford on January 9. Stresky broke Kenny Dombosky’s 50 freestyle time of 21.98 set in 2008, and defeated a record time he has set earlier this year in the 100-yard backstroke (54.92).

In Bethany’s next meet against Chatham and Saint Vincent on January 16, Stresky took down two more records. He broke the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.91) on his own, and then teamed up with teammates Kevin Bakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), Jeremy Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding), and Evan Byrne (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) to set a new 200-yard medley relay mark (1:43.06).

The freshman standout went on to break his 500-yard freestyle (4:49.49) and 100-yard backstroke record (53.42) in Bethany’s next two meets. He also etched his name in the record books in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:38.08) as he now holds four individual and two relay records.

Holenka earned her second SAAC Athlete of the Month award as she started all nine games for the Bison in January. Holenka helped Bethany to a 4-5 record as she led the team in scoring throughout the month. The junior guard averaged 14.9 points to go along with 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest.

The sharp-shooting Holenka scored in double figures in every game during the month, including posting tow outings with 21 points. In an 88-80 victory over Chatham on January 2, she collected a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. She matched that performance on January 20 against Grove City, scoring 21 points, including five three-pointers.

Holenka currently ranks eighth in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference at 13.4 points per contest and sits second in made three-pointers per game (2.3) She is also averaging 4.9 rebounds and ranks 11th in the conference with 33 steals.

Honorable mention selections for the SAAC Athlete of the Month included: women’s basketball players Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) and Ashley Duthie (Madison, Ohio/Madison), diving standout Mia Judulang (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) and senior track athlete Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotsylvania, Va./West Potomac) for the women.
