Dec. 9 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that freshman swimming & diving record setter, Cheyne Stresky (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) and senior women’s basketball standout Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville), have been named the SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Stresky was named the male athlete of the week for the first time in his career after helping the Bison men’s swimming & diving team to a 114-71 win in a dual meet with Hiram College. The freshman paced the Bison with five first-place finishes, including two record-breaking performances. Stresky broke the Bethany College 500-yard freestyle record set by Matt Tucker in 1990 with a time of 4:56.12. He also turned in a time of 48.55 in the first leg of the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay, breaking Stephen Zinz's 100-yard freestyle record (49.27) from 2007.
Stresky also took home first in the 100-yard butterfly (58.64), as well as in two relays. The team of Stresky, Jeremey Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding), Kevin Bakowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), and Evan Byrne (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) won both the 400-yard medley relay (3:57.05) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:26.85).
Tipton helped the Bison go 2-0 this past week as she earned SAAC Athlete of the Week honors. Tipton put together two solid all-around performances against Presidents’ Athletic Conference foes. The senior guard averaged 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists to go along with 3.5 steals per contest in the two-game stretch.
Tipton notched her second-highest scoring total this season with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting on December 5 against Thiel. Tipton is shooting 45% from the field this season, and she is currently among the team leaders in points (9.5), rebounds (4.7), assists (2.3), and steals (2.0).
Other nominees for the men included basketball sophomore Liam Davis (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep) and track & field junior Andre Butler (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) . For the women, swimming & diving junior Christine Pray (Canton, Mich./Canton) and track & field senior Maria Jackson-McBride (Spotsylvania, Va./West Potomac) earned nominations as well.
