Fantastic 4s: Joyce and Daugherty Sweep ECAC Division III South Region Player of the Week Awards

Feb. 3 – DANBURRY, Conn. - Bethany College senior men’s basketball leading scorer Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and freshman women’s basketball standout Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) have both been named Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Regional Player of the Week in their respective sports, announced the ECAC on Tuesday.

Joyce adds another honor to his trophy case as he has been named an ECAC Player of the Week for a second time, to go along with four PAC Player of the Week honors. This also marks the second time that Joyce has earned PAC and ECAC Player of the Week in the same week.

Joyce continued his torrid pace as the Bison posted two victories last week, giving the program six-straight wins. In an 86-68 win over Geneva, Joyce posted his fourth, 30-point game of the season, finishing the contest with 30 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field. In that win, Joyce also finished the game with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

In a 61-59 victory over Thiel, Joyce was at it again, giving the Bison the lead late in the game on a pair of free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining. He then stole the inbounds pass to seal the victory for the Bison. Joyce finished the contest with 20 points, six rebounds and six steals.

On the week, Joyce shot 51 percent from the floor, while averaging 25 points, seven rebounds and 4.5 steals per game. During Bethany’s six-game winning streak, Joyce is averaging 25.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 3.3 assists per game, all while shooting 46 percent from the field, 48.6 percent from three-point range, and 83.6 percent from the charity stripe.

For Daugherty, the award marks the first ECAC Division III South Region Player of the Week for her, though she has been named ECAC South Region Rookie of the week on three-different occasions. Along with the award, Daugherty was also named PAC Player of the Week and was named to the national Team of the Week by D3Hoops.com.

The 6-0 forward may have had her best week to date, helping the Bison to victories over Geneva (85-61) and Thiel (70-66) last week. With the wins, the Bison have now moved into sole possession of fifth place in the PAC regular season standings.

In the victory over the Golden Tornadoes, Daugherty posted career bests in both points (27) and rebounds (16), marking her seventh double-double of the season. In that contest, Daugherty played just 27 minutes, but shot 11-of-17 from the field and tied a career high with eight offensive rebounds.

In the win over Thiel, Daugherty was once again in top form, as she finished the contest 11-of-16 from the field with 27 points while adding 12 rebounds. Those numbers gave her, her league-best eighth double-double of the season.

Over the course of the week, Daugherty shot 66.7 percent from the field while averaging 27 points and 14 rebounds. She also ran her scoring streak of 20 or more points to four consecutive games, the first Bison to accomplish the feat since Jenny Place during the 2005-06 season.

The Bethany basketball teams will be in action on Wednesday, February 4 when they host Thomas More College. The women tip at 6 p.m. with the men to follow.
