Nov. 3 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior running back Jalen Holmes (New, Castle, Pa./New Castle) and junior volleyball standout Arielle Sanders (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) have been named the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Holmes led the Bison offense in a 58-26 win over Grove City on October 31. The junior had 26 carries for a Presidents’ Athletic Conference and Bison single-game record 341 yards. Holmes was dangerous wherever he was on the field, scoring a career-high four touchdowns with runs of 15, 49, 51 and 55 yards.
Along with shattering the single-game mark for rushing yards, Holmes became the Bison’s single-season rushing record holder (1,268). He also broke the school’s single-season rushing touchdown record (14) previously held by Eric Walker in 2012.
Posting the second-highest rushing total of any back in the country this season, Holmes became the first Bethany running back to reach the 1,000-yard mark since Will Anderson in 2002. Holmes currently ranks second in the PAC in rushing, sitting at 141.0 yards per game. His total yardage currently ranks second in the conference, while his touchdowns sit third.
Sanders helped carry the Bison volleyball team to a 2-0 week. The junior was instrumental at the net as Bethany held their opponents to a combined .124 hitting percentage. Sanders hit .360 in two matches from the middle blocker position. She totaled 24 kills in two games, while committing just six errors in 50 attempts.
In a four-set victory over conference rival Geneva, Sanders tallied four blocks and added nine kills as the Green & White held the Golden Tornadoes to a .028 hitting percentage. In the 3-1 win over Case Western Reserve, Sanders had 15 kills while making just one error in 33 attempts (.454 hitting percentage).
