Sept. 9 - BETHANY, W. Va. - Bison defensive end sophomore Khallid Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline) and junior field hockey standout Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) were selected as the Athletes of the Week for Sept. 1 by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on Tuesday morning.
Pierce had a strong first game of the season as he finished the contest with six tackles against the University of Mount Union last Saturday. Pierce had one sack and one pass breakup in the contest, but also continuously disrupted the Purple Raider backfield, finishing the day with a career-high four tackles for loss. Through one game this season, Pierce already has a third of the tackles for loss that he did a year ago.
Gill was a major reason why the Bethany field hockey team grabbed their first victory of the year, defeating Wilson College, 2-0. Gill finished the game with three points (goal & assist) and played 66 minutes. Over the week, Gill registered four shots with two coming on goal.
Others that were nominated for the men included soccer athlete Emmet Dwyer (Tipperary, Ireland/Borrisokane Community College), wide receiver Tyler Ambush (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and cross country runner Donald Bierhals (Cabot, Pa./Knoch). On the women’s side was volleyball standout Julia Mouch (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview), cross country runner Jessica Olson (Moon, Pa./Moon), as well as soccer athletes Julie Slezak (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and McKenna Junkin (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington).
