Martell/Prato Named Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week

Feb. 18 – BETHANY, W. Va. –Swimming & Diving sophomore Brandon Martell (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) and Track & Field senior Paige Prato (Gibsonia, Pa./Deer Lakes) have been named the Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Athletes of the Week announced the Bethany SAAC on Tuesday.

Martell made the most of his last meet of the season, placing second in the one-meter dive and third in the three-meter at the PAC Championships last week. In the one-meter dive, Martell garnered a second-place finish, completing his 11 dives with a total score of 386.35. During the one-meter diving event, Martell also captured the six dive school record, posting a score of 246.60, breaking Pedro Cuesta’s 1981 mark of 242.0.

Earlier in the weekend, Martell nabbed a third-place finish in the three-meter dive, posting a total score of 336.80. His total was also a Bethany best, snapping the previous mark of 325.20 set by Joe Kennedy in 2004.

Prato notched two top-five spots at the Mid February Track Meet hosted by Baldwin Wallace on Friday. In yet another impressive performance, she finished third place in a field of 31 competitors in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.80. Adding to that, she also notched a fourth-place finish in the 55 meter dash (7.53).

It was just the second indoor meet of the season for Prato, who in her previous outing also posted two top-five finishes at the Jim Wuske Invitational hosted by The University of Mount Union.

Other nominees for SAAC Athlete of the Week included men’s basketball junior Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and sophomore track athlete Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) on the men’s side, and women’s basketball senior Taylor Verrico (Monaca, Pa./Quigley) and swimming & diving sophomore Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) for the women.
