March 8 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that seniors Matt Shaffer (McDonald, Pa. / Fort Cherry) and Deanna Mihalco (Patterson, N.Y./Brewster) have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Shaffer got off to a hot start in the batters’ box in a pair of doubleheaders during opening weekend for the Green & White. He hit .667 on the week, collecting eight total hits while driving in four RBIs.
The senior first baseman collected a pair of multi-hit games as the Green & White swept Northwestern (Minn.) by scores of 4-2 and 2-1. Shaffer tallied two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the first game. He then produced three hits in the one-run victory in the nightcap, driving in both Bison runs.
In a doubleheader with Delaware Valley on Sunday, Shaffer hit .500, including a 2-for-3 outing with a RBI in a 5-2, extra-inning loss in the second game.
Mihalco also started her senior year off on the right track, hitting .455 in four games as she helped the Bison softball team to a 2-2 record through the first two days of competition.
Throughout the first two doubleheaders, Mihalco totaled five hits, including a double, while driving in four RBIs. The senior was key in both team victories, producing a two-run, walk-off single in a 4-3 win over Misericordia. She also tallied three hits in a 3-2 victory against Case Western Reserve.
Through six games on the season, Mihalco is now hit .467 with a team-high seven hits and six RBIs.
Other nominees for the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week included: senior Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and junior Cody Gross (West Mifflin, Pa./West Mifflin) for the men, and sophomore pitcher Cassie Weiss (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) for the women.
