Feb. 24 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that juniors, women’s basketball guard Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) and men’s basketball forward Alan Harper (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic), have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Tipton averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Bison who clinched a first-round home playoff game for the first time in four seasons. Tipton led the Bison in scoring in the team's 70-64 loss to Grove City, coming just one-point shy of her career high with 21. She also added eight rebounds against the Wolverines.
In the game against W&J, Tipton was once again among the team leaders, finishing the contest with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Over the course of the week, Tipton shot the ball with efficiency, shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Having started in 24 of the 25 games over the course of the regular season, Tipton finished the year with career highs in both points per game (10.8) and rebounds per contest (4.9). Tipton broke the double-digit scoring mark 15 times, which included two, 20-point games.
Harper had arguably the best offensive week of his career as he averaged 22 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Bison last week. Harper finished the final two games of the regular season shooting a blistering .607 from the field, including 8-of-16 from behind the three-point arc.
Harper broke his career record twice on the week, accumulating back-to-back 20 point games for the first time in his career. Against Grove City, Harper notched 20 points, and followed that with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting in the regular-season finale against W&J.
Like Tipton, Harper put together his best season as a Bison. Harper took over a starting role back on January 3 against Baldwin Wallace, and has started every game since. In those 14 games, Harper has posted double-digits in the scoring column nine times. He finished the regular season as Bethany’s leader in both field goal percentage (.433) and three-point accuracy (.345).
Other nominees for SAAC Athlete of the Week included junior track standout Umar More (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) for the men, and freshman basketball forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) for the women.
