Dec. 9 - BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior sprinter Kyle Minger (Richmond, Ohio/Edison Local) and freshman forward Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) have been named the Bison SAAC Athletes of the Week.
The big winner on the day at the Youngstown State Icebreaker Meet was Minger, who defeated athletes from Division I, II, and III institutions to capture first place in the 400 meter dash (49.22). Also earning Presidents’ Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week, Minger placed first in six of his 11 runs in the 400 a year ago. His fastest time a year ago was a 48.82 which he ran at the Gator Invitational hosted by Allegheny College. With his performance in his first race of the year, Minger is just .4 seconds behind his top time.
Daugherty was impressive over Bethany's two-game stretch last week. Averaging 19 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, Daugherty shot 14-of-31 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the charity stripe. Her best output was in a win over Thiel, as she recorded her second double-double of the year with 22 points and 14 boards. The totals also were new career-highs for Daugherty.
Others considered for the award on the men’s side were sophomore swimmer Jeremy Starr (Warren, Ohio/Warren G. Harding) and junior forward Andres Herrero (Guadalajera, Spain/Torrejon). The other women were swimmers, senior Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando) and junior Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./GHCHS).
