Oct. 15 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior football wideout Tyler Ambush (Germantown, Md./Northwest) and freshman women’s tennis standout Pia Hager (Stuttgart, Germany) have been named the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Week.
Ambush earned his first SAAC Athlete of the Week honor of the season as he paced the Bison football team’s offense in a 35-point performance against Carnegie Mellon. In the game, Ambush tallied a career-best 203 yards, making eight catches while also scoring a pair of touchdowns. The game marked the second time this season that the junior has averaged at least 25 yards per catch (also accomplished the feat at Waynesburg in week four).
Ambush has made a name for himself during the 2015 campaign, ranking third in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference in receiving yards per contest. Ambush has tallied 575 yards on just 29 catches, averaging 95.8 yards per game, while posting a gaudy 19.8 yards-per-catch average.
Hager also earned her first SAAC Athlete of the Week award after going 2-0 in singles play against conference opponents last week. She first defeated Waynesburg’s Rachel Klemash 6-0, 6-1, before taking down Geneva’s Sara Stoll 6-3, 6-3.
Hager has yet to drop a set in a singles win this season and is currently 20-2 in total sets after a win earlier this week. She is currently tied for second overall in the PAC in winning percentage (.909), while ranking first amongst her No. 1 singles counterparts. Her 10 victories in singles action are the most by a Bison since Maria Vallone in 2012.
Honorable mentions for the Bethany SAAC Athlete of the Week awards include: senior quarterback Lincon Reyes (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), junior cross country runner Ryan Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) and junior soccer goalie Callum Appleby (Maidstone, United Kingdom) for the men, as well as juniors Dylana McKenzie (Hopewell, Ohio/West Muskingum), soccer forward Michaela Hinerman (Weirton, W.Va./Brooke), cross country athlete Michaela Ross (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Leilehua ) and Natalie Knauer (West Deptford, N.J./Gateway Regional).
