Umar Moore/Kelsea Daugherty Named Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Month for January

Feb. 4 - BETHANY, W. Va. - The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that junior track & field athlete Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and freshman basketball standout Kelsea Daugherty (Newport, Ohio/Frontier) have been named the Bethany SAAC Athletes of the Month for the Month of January.

During the ten games that made up the nomination window, Daugherty caught fire, helping the Bison to four win in the month, and their best start since the 2011-12 campaign. During the 10 games, Daugherty was named PAC Player of the Week, once, and ECAC Division III South Rookie of the Week three seperate times.

Daugherty has averaged a double-double, scoring 17.7 points and adding 10.3 rebounds per contest. She scored in double figures in eight of the ten games, eclipsing the 20-point mark five separate times. Along with those numbers, the freshman forward is also shot 51 percent from the field.

In the ten contests, she has posted five double-doubles, including three-straight in conference matchups with Thomas More, Waynesburg and Westminster. In her last three games in the month, the Bison went 2-1, as she averaged 25.6 points and 12 rebounds per night. She also scored 20+ points in three straight games, the first Bison to do so since Jenny Place in 2005-06.

Moore started his junior year with a third-place finish in the long jump at the YSU Icebreaker Meet. His jump of 21’11.75” was third in a field of 24 competitors, which included athletes in Divisions I, II and III.

Moore than earned PAC Field Athlete of the Week honors for his performance at the Otterbein Invitational, where he captured second in the long jump and first in the triple. In the triple jump, Moore posted a best jump of 47’0.75”, besting all other competitors by at least a foot. He then posted a second-place mark in the long jump, finishing with a leap of 22’9”. Both of those marks were good enough to place him in the top ten in NCAA qualifying in each event at the time. Those numbers also qualified him for the ECAC Championship Meet in both events.

Moore then competed in the Denison University Lid-Lifter Invitational where he swept his field events, taking first in both the long jump (21’11.5”) and the triple jump (46’4.75”). Thanks to winning both events, Moore was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III South Region Field Athlete of the Week.

Other nominees for SAAC Athlete of the Month included freshman track & field standout Whitney Martin (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek), junior swimming & diving athlete Alexi Pyles (Los Angeles, Calif./Granada Hills Charter) and junior basketball guard Mikyla Tipton (Wellsville, Ohio/Wellsville) for the women.
