March 3 – BETHANY, W. Va. – The Bethany College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has announced that track standouts, junior Umar Moore (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) and freshman Whitney Martin (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) have been named the SAAC Athletes of the Month.
Martin competed in three individual events during the month between the Denison Lid-Lifter Invitational and the Mount Union Jim Wuske Invitational. During that time, Martin captured two first place finishes. At Denison, Martin finished first in the 60 meter dash, shattering the school record with a time of 7.90. She also notched a second-place finish in the 200-meter out of 38 runners, finishing with a 26.50. That time proved to be just .05 seconds from the school record.
At the Jim Wuske Invitational, Martin only completed in the 60-meter dash, but came out on top in a field of 41 runners by re-breaking the Bethany record with a 7.88.
Moore competed in four field events during the month, competing in both the long jump and triple jump, twice. At Denison, Moore captured two wins, beating all comers in the triple jump with a leap of 46'4.75". He also defeated 12 other competitors in the long jump with a jump of 21'11.5".
At the Jim Wuske Invitational, Moore was at it again, capturing both events. In a field of 30 in the long jump, Moore defeated all comers by 1'4", posting a distance of 23'1.75". He then defeated 23 other athletes in the triple jump with a distance of 46'6.75". Overall, Moore was a perfect 4-4 in field events in the month.
Other nominees for SAAC Athlete of the Month included senior guard Delonte’ Joyce (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and sophomore swimming standout Cody Hussey (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) for the men, and sophomore point guard Alexis Naples (Salem, Ohio/South Range) and senior swimming & diving athlete Marina Baker (Winchester, Va./Sherando) for the women.
