Class of 1950
Earl Roper was a four-year letterwinner on both the Bison football and baseball teams. Serving as the team captain of the gridiron squad in 1948 and 1949, he also held the baseball captain duties in 1949 and 1950.
For his football performances, Roper was named to NAIA All-Star teams for three seasons and earned selections to All-Opponent Teams from Geneva, Washington & Jefferson, Fairmont State, the University of Buffalo, Waynesburg, and Marietta.
At the plate, Roper led the Bison baseball team in batting average during all four seasons, completing his career with a .385 mark.
A chemistry major, Roper was President of the Varsity B Club and a member of the Dean's List, Kalon Leadership Society, and Phi Kappa Tau fraternity during his time at Bethany.
Roper went on to become a Quality Control Manager for Lucas Aerospace. He resides in La Crescenta, Calif., and is married to the former Betty Thompson, a member of Bethany's Class of 1952. Five children complete their family.
