Warner G. (Pete) Peterson
Tennis Coach, 1952–1968
Warner G. Peterson was an outstanding Men's Tennis coach for the College from 1952-1968. He compiled a record of 132-27 in matches and won eight Conference championships (five West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and three PAC) and four runner-ups.
Peterson coached many outstanding singles and doubles players, including Bethany Hall of Famers Joe Kurey, Ian Webb, Kirk Hunter, and Carol Hunter.
Peterson was at Bethany from 1952-1970, serving as the College's business manager and representing Bethany on the Board of the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Prior to coming to Bethany, Peterson was associated with Ohio Northern College and served for eight years in the Army under General Patton in the campaigns through North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. When Peterson retired from the Army, he had earned the rank of Major.
Peterson passed away in 1972. He is survived by his wife, Fernanda Peterson, of Denver, Colo., and three children.
