April 16 - GREENSBURG, Pa. – After totaling 17 hits in a 13-12 loss in game one, the Bethany College baseball team delivered 10 more hits in a 9-6 victory over Pitt-Greensburg to gain a split of the non-conference doubleheader Monday.
In game two, the Bison (10-16) used two big innings to take the victory. The Green and White scored first on an RBI double by junior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) in the first, but two home runs by the Bobcats (17-17) put the home team in front 3-1. Bethany’s first big inning came in the third when Kubis ripped a two-run double and junior Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) followed with a two-run homer for a 5-3 BC lead.
Another Bison long ball keyed a four-run fifth inning. After senior T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) hit an RBI single, freshman Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) blasted a three-run homer to build a 9-3 advantage. The Bobcats made a comeback, scoring once in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but Kubis finished off the game with a K and a tapper back to the mound to post his fourth save of the year.
The middle of the Bethany line-up was big in the win with Kubis going 3-for-4 with three RBI and Ziants having two hits and a pair of RBI. Freshman pitcher Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) improved to 3-1 for the season after striking out six in six innings of work while allowing three earned runs.
The opener saw Bethany score at least one run in every inning, but Pitt-Greensburg came away with the win off the strength of a nine-run inning and a walk-off homer. The Bison surged to a 7-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to a two-run double by Kubis and a two-run single from Zarewicz. UPG got on the board with a pair of tallies in the third and blew up for nine runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-8 lead.
Bethany came back to tie the score with two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth. Then in the seventh, BC went in front 12-11 with an RBI single by Miller. The lead was short-lived going into the bottom of the seventh, as a leadoff triple was followed by a walk-off two-run homer to give the Bobcats a 13-12 victory. Kubis was tagged with the loss after coming in to start the seventh following freshman Josh Dow (Groton, Conn./Griswold), who threw two scoreless innings of relief.
Six different Bison had two or more hits in the game, as the Green and White posted 17 for the game. Sophomore Juls Leto (McKees, Rocks, Pa./OLSH) was 4-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the way. Kubis had a monster day with six hits for the day, including 3-for-4 in the first game with four RBI.
