April 14 - CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Bethany College baseball team travelled to Case Western Reserve Saturday and came away with a split, losing game one 7-4 before rebounding to take the second game 6-2.

The Bison (9-15) grabbed the lead early in game two with solo runs in the first two frames. In the first, junior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) singled with two outs, took third in a single by freshman Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) and scored on a wild pitch. In the second, senior Anthony Packer (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) hit a leadoff single and later scored on a base hit by sophomore Juls Leto (McKees, Rocks, Pa./OLSH).

Although the Spartans (21-12-1) managed one base runner in each of the first four innings, Bison freshman starter Tyler Kurtz (Jerusalem, Ohio/Barnesville) kept the home team off the board. Bethany then extended its lead to 5-0 in the fifth thanks to a pair of Case errors. The miscues brought in two of the runs, while Packer was credited with an RBI for the other.

Kurtz ran into trouble in the fifth after hitting consecutive batters in the fifth and Case scored twice with two singles. Kubis was summoned from the bullpen with the tying run at the plate and closed down the threat with a fly out. After BC tacked on a key insurance run off a Kubis ground out in the sixth inning, the Bison closer took care of the Spartans in the final two innings. He retired them in order in the sixth and struck out the side in the seventh for his third save of year and 20th of his career.

Kubis’s effort preserved the first collegiate win for Kurtz, who threw four and two-innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Kubis also led the Bison at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while Leto had two singles, one RBI and one run scored.

In the first contest, the Spartans went in front with two runs in the first, but Bethany grabbed the lead with three in the third frame. Freshman Dan Weller (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) stole home as part of a double steal with junior Alex Evans (Washington, Pa.) and Kubis stroked a two-run double. Case regained the lead with a pair of tallies in the third and then scored three times in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead.

Bethany took one off their deficit in the sixth on an RBI single by Miller, but a double play ended that inning and in the seventh, BC put two runners on with one out but a strike out and ground out ended the game.

Weller was the only Bison to pick up two hits, while Kubis drove in a pair. Taking the loss on the hill was junior Trent Cornwell (Grove City, Ohio), who started and threw three innings.

The Bison were scheduled to play at D’Youville Sunday but the games have been cancelled due to rain. Next up for BC is a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Pitt-Greensburg.
