Bethany Loses at Pitt-Greensburg in 12-Inning Thriller

April 9 - GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team and Pitt-Greensburg locked horns in an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel for over three hours, but an error brought in the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning, as the Bobcats pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Bison Tuesday afternoon.

The game was originally set to be the first of two between the teams, but due to the length of the opener and the unlikeliness that it would be completed before darkness set in caused the second game to be postponed.

Bethany managed to put a runner on in every inning with 11 walks and six hits, but was unable to get the key hit to plate a runner. The Bison nearly took the lead in the sixth on a one-out single by sophomore CF Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly), but the potential go-ahead run was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.

Bethany’s pitchers did not have to dodge as many bullets, as they controlled the Bobcat offense throughout the game. Freshman Ryan Bisi (right - Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) started and breezed through seven innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out three. Freshman Joe Giles (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) and senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) threw scoreless frames and freshman Joe Hoffman (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) put up zeroes in the 10th and 11th innings.

The winning run came in the 12th when UPG had a leadoff single, a sacrifice and then an error brought in the lone score to end the game after three hours and 20 minutes.

Bethany will get a chance to move on from the loss quickly, as the Bison travel to Thiel for a PAC Wednesday at 3 p.m.
