April 15 -GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel scored seven runs in the middle innings to blow open Monday’s game and go on to a 10-1 victory over the Bethany College baseball team.
The Tomcats scored one run in the first inning and the lead ballooned quickly in the middle innings, as TC struck for four in the fourth inning and another three runs in the fifth. Thiel plated its final two runs in the eighth before the Bison scored their run in the ninth. Sophomore pinch-hitter Kyle Wales (Wellsburg, W.Va./Brooke) belted a leadoff double, moved to third on an error and scored on a fielder’s choice hit by freshman Matt Shaffer (right - McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry).
Bethany was held to just six hits in the game, with two each from junior 2B Dominic Controguerra (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) and junior 3B Tanner Werkmann (Germantown, Md./Poolesville). Taking the loss on the mound was freshman Ryan Bisi (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe). He struck out two in his five innings of work.
The Bison will play their fifth PAC game in four days on Tuesday when they host Saint Vincent for the opening game of their conference series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bethany Park.
