Bethany Splits at Saint Vincent, Takes PAC Series
April 25 - LATROBE, Pa. – After sophomore Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) keyed a six-run inning with a two-run double, the bullpen blanked Saint Vincent over the final 3+ innings, as the Bethany College baseball team held on for an 8-7 victory in game two of their PAC doubleheader Thursday in Latrobe.
The Bearcats rallied for a 10-8 win in the opening game Thursday to give the teams a split of the twinbill. However, thanks to a 4-2 victory by the Bison (10-20, 7-14) back on April 17, BC took the series from Saint Vincent (15-13, 11-5).
In the nightcap, Bethany took the lead with an RBI single by junior Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./Sto-Rox) and a bases-loaded walk by junior Zac Edmiston (right - California, Pa.) in the second inning. The Bearcats answered with four runs in the last of the second to take the lead, which lasted until the fourth. That’s when the Bison struck for six runs on five hits, beginning with another RBI single by Leto and a sacrifice fly from Edmiston.
The rest of the BC damage came with two outs. Junior Tanner Werkmann (Germantown, Md./Poolesville) singled in one run right before Miller’s two-run double to right field. The frame was capped by an RBI single from freshman catcher Matt Shaffer (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) and Bethany was on top 8-4.
The Bearcats responded with three scores in the bottom of the fourth and spent the rest of the game threatening to tie or take the lead. Saint Vincent put a runner on the fifth, but a double play ended the threat. A hit batter and walk put a pair on in the sixth, but BC escaped again with a fielder’s choice to end the inning. Then in the seventh, SVC loaded the bases with one out. Edmiston managed to get out of the jam and earn the save by retiring the final two batters with a fly out and K. He saved the win for freshman Joe Hoffman (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes), who threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
In game one, Bethany used back-to-back three-run innings in the fourth and fifth to construct a 7-2 lead, but the Bearcats rallied with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take the lead. In the top of the seventh, Bethany scored once on an RBI single by Miller, who had a big day with the stick, and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but a fielder’s choice closed the game and gave the win to Saint Vincent.
The Bison outhit SVC 12-11 in the opening game, as sophomore Josh Dow (Groton, Conn./Griswold) was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Miller (right) went 2-4 in the first game with three RBI and two runs scored. He finished the afternoon with four hits, including a double and triple, and he knocked in five. Werkmann, senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and senior Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) all had two hits in the game as well.
Bethany is back on the diamond Friday afternoon when it hosts Geneva in a single game at 4 p.m. Prior to first pitch, the Bison will honor their three seniors in Kubis, Ziants and Ryan Styche (Buena Vista, Pa./Elizabeth Forward).
