BETHANY TAKES GROVE CITY SERIES WITH SATURDAY SPLIT
March 24 - BETHANY, W.Va. – Freshman Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) threw five and two-thirds strong innings and the Bethany College baseball team made his effort stand with four late runs to pull away for a 7-2 win in game two of Saturday’s twinbill with visiting Grove City.
The victory gave the Bison (5-6, 3-3) a split of the doubleheader and two out of three in the series with the Wolverines (3-12, 1-2), who opened the day by rallying for a 5-4 eight-inning victory in the opening game.
Bethany jumped out in front in the nightcap when junior DH Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall) hammered an RBI double that scored junior SS Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell). The lead grew to 2-0 in the second when freshman CF Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) doubled in senior RF Anthony Packer (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional).
A series of Grove City miscues extended the BC margin to 3-0 in the fourth. Junior LF Alex Evans (Washington, Pa.) reached on an error, took second on a wild pitch and came all the way around to score on another GCC error. Meanwhile, Meier was keeping Grove City off the scoreboard, as the Wolverines stranded five runners through the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth, Grove City finally put together a scoring rally, scoring twice, with the second run coming on a hit batter with the bases loaded. The sacks were still full when sophomore Zac Edmiston (California, Pa.) posted a strikeout to close the threat and protect BC’s 3-2 lead.
The bottom of the sixth saw Bethany plate four runs to add insurance to their lead. A two-run single by Packer was the highlight, while Evans also drove in one with a single and Miller scored on a wild pitch. Kubis then retired GCC in order in the seventh to finish off the victory.
Meier earned his first collegiate win by not allowing an earned run and only giving up five hits. At the plate, Packer was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Ziants also went 2-for-3 and knocked in one.
In the first game, Bethany took a 4-0 lead after two innings. Sophomore 3B Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./OLSH) singled, took third on a Kubis single and when he was picked off first, Kubis stayed in the rundown long enough to allow Leto to swipe home. Then in the second frame, senior catcher T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) brought home two with a single and he came home on a Leto base hit for a four-run BC advantage.
Grove City would slowly chip away at the Green and White lead through the rest of the game. One tally in the third and fifth innings was followed by two in the sixth to even the score. The game carried into extra innings and the first batter in the eighth was Grove City’s Brandon Durbin, who belted a homer just inside the left-field foul pole for the go-ahead run and the Bison could not manage a score in the last of the eighth.
A trio of BC players turned in two hits apiece, including Zarewicz, Leto and sophomore 2B Juls Leto (Richmond, Ohio/Edison). The Bethany starter was freshman Tyler Kurtz (Jerusalem, Ohio/Barnesville), who was solid in five and a third innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out four with just one walk. Kubis suffered the loss after allowing one run in one and a third innings of work.
Bethany will be back on the diamond Tuesday with a PAC doubleheader at Thomas More.
