March 22 - WEXFORD, Pa. – After leading the team to a 5-1 record over spring break last week, Bethany College freshman Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) was selected as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Hitter of the Week for March 22.
At the plate, Kubis, BC’s starting third baseman, hit a team-best .522 (12-23) and posted a slugging percentage of .696 as he helped the Green and White record their best mark in Florida since they went 6-2 in 2005. He slugged two doubles, one triple, knocked in five and scored a team-leading eight runs over the week.
Kubis has at least one hit in all six games and four contests with two or more. In an 8-7 victory over Manhattanville, he was 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs scored and he recorded another three-hit effort with a trio of singles, as well as one RBI and one run, in an 8-6 triumph over Delaware Valley on the last day of the trip.
In addition to his work with the bat, Kubis is also the team’s closer and picked up three saves. His first came in the Bison’s third win over Earlham, a 6-4 decision in which he struck out two. Later that same day, he retired Manhattanville in order in the ninth to preserve that victory. And in the Delaware Valley triumph, he pitched two innings, getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the eighth and a first-and-third with one out threat in the ninth by turning a bouncer back to the mound into a 1-6-3 game-ending double play.
“If this is any indication of the type of career Brad is going to have, I’ll be very happy,” said Bison head coach Rick Carver. “He certainly started his career in fine fashion and while it was a team effort, his individual performance was a huge factor in our success.”
A psychology major, Brad is the son of Bob & Terri Kubis of Aliquippa, Pa.
