Bison Comeback Falls Short in Series Finale Against Thomas More
April 7 - BETHANY, W.Va. – After trailing by as many as five runs, the Bethany College baseball team brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Thomas More managed to get out of the inning and take a 7-5 victory in the series finale between the PAC schools.
The Saints quickly built a 4-0 lead in the first inning and added another in the third, but that was trimmed down when Bison sophomore LF Cory Myers (right - Verona, Pa./Plum) hit a two-run double in the third inning. Thomas More answered the BC scores by extending the advantage up to 7-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Bethany was able to clip two runs off the deficit in the fifth inning on an RBI single by senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore CF Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly). The margin remained three runs until BC made a strong push in the ninth inning. Miller rolled an RBI single through the left side and there were runners on first and third with two outs. But a strikeout ended the game and Thomas More came away with the win.
The Bison finished the game with 13 hits, including two each for Kubis, Myers, Werkmann, sophomore Dan Petrella (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and sophomore Zac Edmiston (California, Pa.). Junior Zak Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) took the loss on the mound.
Next up for Bethany is a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Pitt-Greensburg. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
