The Bethany College baseball team lost a 9-3 decision Saturday afternoon to visiting Saint Vincent in the opening game of the three-game PAC series between the teams this weekend.
Saturday was supposed to be a doubleheader between the teams, but the second game was postponed due to the rain and field conditions. The game will be made up Sunday at Saint Vincent. The teams will play a seven-inning contest with Bethany as the home team first and then play the nine-inning game that was originally scheduled to be played in Latrobe.
The Bison (11-18, 5-11) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to RBI singles from freshman Dan Weller (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) and sophomore Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./OLSH). The Bearcats (20-11, 10-8) came back with three runs in the third inning and extended their margin to 5-2 with a pair of tallies in the fifth frame.
In the last of the fifth, Bethany manufactured a run when Weller walked with one out, took second on a wild pitch and was chased home with a two-out RBI single by junior Alex Evans (Washington, Pa.). The BC hopes for a comeback in the seventh were dimmed when Saint Vincent pounded out four runs on six hits to swell their cushion to 9-3 and that’s how the scoring ended.
Bethany’s offense was sparked by Evans, who was 2-for-4 with one RBI, and Weller, who reached base and scored twice and also knocked in one. Taking the loss on the hill was freshman Tyler Kurtz (Jerusalem, Ohio/Barnesville), who started and threw six frames. He gave up five runs on five hits while striking out five and walking five.
