April 27 - NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team had 16 hits compared to Westminster’s 15, but the Titans took better advantage of their opportunities to claim a 14-4 victory over Bison Friday afternoon in the opening game of their PAC series.

Westminster opened the scoring with three runs in the first and two more in the second to construct a 5-0 advantage. The Bison (13-20, 7-12) jumped on the board for the first time in the top of the fourth. With two outs, sophomore Juls Leto (McKees Rocks, Pa./OLSH) and senior Anthony Packer (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) hit consecutive RBI singles that sliced the deficit to 5-2.

The Titans (21-13, 12-6) would go back to adding to their lead by scoring twice in the fourth and adding four tallies in the fifth. Bethany’s final runs came in the seventh, as senior T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) stroked an RBI single and freshman Dan Weller (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) scored on a wild pitch. The scoring was capped with Westminster adding one more in the seventh and a pair of runs in the eighth.

Five Bison had two or more hits in the setback, led by Leto, who was 4-for-5 with one RBI. Among Weller’s three hits was a double, BC’s lone extra-base hit in the contest, while Packer, Zarewicz and sophomore Dylan Wassel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) all had a pair of singles.

Taking the loss on the mound was freshman Tyler Kurtz (Jerusalem, Ohio/Barnesville). He threw the opening three and two-thirds innings and allowed four earned runs.

The teams are scheduled to conclude their series Saturday afternoon at Bethany Park. The five Bison seniors will be honored prior to the doubleheader, which will begin at 1 p.m.
