April 4 - BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany baseball team was swept in a PAC doubleheader Saturday by visiting Waynesburg, as the Yellow Jackets claimed wins of 9-2 and 12-7.
The opening game had a promising start for the Bison (1-13, 0-8). After sophomore starting pitcher Mike Muklewicz (Bridgeport, Ohio) stranded two Waynesburg runners in the first to keep the visitors off the scoreboard, sophomore CF Tyler Dillinger (McKeesport, Pa.) led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run to left, his first of the year. BC pushed their lead to 2-0 when sophomore RF Mike Pegg (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) singled in freshman SS Chad Stephen (Barnesville, Ohio) later in the inning.
From there, the Yellow Jackets (10-11, 5-5) would use Bethany miscues to take control of the game. A wild pitch scored a run in the second to trim the Bison lead to 2-1. In the third inning, two walks kept the inning alive and a two-out single allowed Waynesburg to tie the game. An error in the fourth helped the visitors score the go-ahead run and another BC miscue in the fifth opened the gates for three unearned tallies to run the Waynesburg lead to 6-2. The Yellow Jackets closed the scoring with three runs, assisted by two more Bethany errors, in the seventh.
The Bison finished the opener with seven hits, two each from Stephen and junior LF Mark Cummins. Muklewicz took the loss after going four and a third innings and allowing five runs, three earned.
Misplays continued to plague Bethany in the second game, as an error to leadoff the game eventually led to the first run of the contest. Waynesburg’s Wes White, who scored the first run, also accounted for the second when he lifted a solo homer to left for a 2-0 Yellow Jacket lead in the second inning.
The Bison got on the board in the third and nearly tied the score. Freshman SS Levi Bender (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon-Upsur) walked to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice. Cummins brought Bender home with a double to the gap in right-center to make it 2-1 Waynesburg. Dillinger followed with a single to left that Cummins tried to score on, but was thrown out on a solid relay throw from the outfield and Bethany remained down by a run.
BC’s missed opportunity came back to haunt them, as the Yellow Jackets bounced back with three runs in the fourth inning to surge in front 5-1. Waynesburg tacked on seven more runs in the sixth inning, which gave them a large enough lead to shrug off the Bison’s run in the sixth and five tallies in the seventh.
Gathering multiple RBIs in the game for BC was Pegg, who was 2-for-3 with two knocked in, and freshman Bryce Patterson (McKeesport, Pa.), who brought in a pair in the seventh with a single. Sophomore 1B Eric Fudala (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) also went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior Josh Eckelberger (Beaver, Pa.) picked up the loss after throwing the first five and a third innings.
Bethany will be back in action Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader at Case Western Reserve at 1 p.m.
