Kubis Gem Keys Bethany’s Season-Ending Split at Behrend

May 4 - ERIE, Pa. – Making his final appearance on the mound for the Bethany College baseball team, senior Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) made it a memorable one, as he struck out eight in twirling a complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory at Penn State Behrend Saturday afternoon.

The Lions (26-9) would make it a split for the day when they pushed in a run in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap. The defeat gave the Bison a final record of 12-26 for the season.

Junior Zac Edmiston (California, Pa.) and Kubis (right) started the game with singles. Following two strikeouts, sophomore Derek Miller (Rayland, Ohio/Linsly) singled through the right side to score Edmiston and BC was on top 1-0.

That proved to be enough for Kubis, who fought off challenges all game from the Behrend offense. He would retire the side in order only once, which came in the third inning. The Lions put two runners on in the fourth and sixth innings, but ground outs ended both threats. Then in the seventh, a two-out single and stolen base and throwing error had the tying run on third base with two outs, but Kubis, the program’s all-time leader in saves, slammed the door when he induced a foul out to first base for the final out in the 1-0 victory.

After recording 27 career saves, Kubis’ final two pitching appearances were as a starter. In Saturday’s win, which raised his record to 3-1 this year, he allowed seven hits but did not walk a batter and struck out eight. In those two starts, Kubis threw 15 shutout innings and struck out 17 batters while walking just one.

At the plate, BC totaled eight hits, led by junior Dominic Controguerra (Richmond, Ohio/Edison), who went 3-for-3.

In game two, Bethany rallied with two late runs to tie the Lions at 4-4, but three singles wrapped around an error led to the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the home team and the Bison’s season ended with a 5-4 defeat. After Behrend grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, the Green and White used two Lion errors to plate a pair of runs in the second without a hit and take a 2-1 lead.

Bethany, who had just three hits in the second game, took advantage of their opportunities to come back to tie the game. In the fourth, Miller (right) singled, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out and came home on a wild pitch. Then in the sixth, junior Dylan Wassel (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) led off with single and would eventually score on a base hit by senior Chuck Ziants (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall).

The BC starter in game two was junior Zak Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who went into the second inning. Freshman Joe Hoffman (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) came on in relief and threw two scoreless innings before giving way to sophomore Ryan Meier (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward). He allowed just one hit through three innings before immediately running into trouble in the seventh. A leadoff bunt single was followed by an error and another bunt single to load the bases and then a single brought home the winning run.

The games represented the final appearances with the Bison for three seniors, including Kubis, Ziants and Ryan Styche (Buena Vista, Pa./Elizabeth Forward).
