KUBIS SETS SAVES MARK AS BISON SPLIT AT WAYNESBURG
April 10 - WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Freshman Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) earned his eighth save of the year to break the school’s single-season record in the Bethany College baseball team’s 7-5 win over Waynesburg in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
The victory came after the Yellow Jackets survived a pitcher’s duel in the opener, a 2-1 Waynesburg win to give them two of three in the PAC series with the Bison.
In the first game, BC freshman Zach Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Waynesburg’s Zac Rhoades swapped zeroes on the score board until the Jackets grabbed the lead on a Noah Pust RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. Bethany struck back to tie the game in the sixth when Kubis drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on an RBI single by senior DH Chris Leasure (Stafford, Ohio/Monroe Central).
The Yellow Jackets would regain the advantage in the sixth when a wild pitch with two outs brought in the go-ahead score. The Bison had a chance in the seventh after junior catcher Josh Lawrence (Mather, Pa./Jefferson-Morgan) stroked a leadoff double and a walk one out later put the go-ahead run on first. However, Waynesburg closer Chris Dittmar picked up a strike out and then got Kubis to bounce into a fielder’s choice to finish the game.
Bethany finished with seven hits in the game, including two each from sophomore RF Anthony Packer (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) and Leasure. The hard-luck loss was charged to Kozlowski (1-2), who threw six innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out two without walking a batter.
The Bison were forced to rally in the second game, as Waynesburg 2B Wes White belted a two-run homer in the second inning to give the home team the lead. The margin didn’t last long, as BC struck for five runs in the third frame. Junior RF Mike Pegg (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) ripped a double to score the first run, which was followed by an RBI ground out from Kubis and a sacrifice fly by Leasure. The final two runs were chased home by consecutive doubles from senior LF Mark Cummins (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and freshman SS Alex Evans (Washington, Pa.).
In the fifth, BC tacked on two more when junior 2B Eric Fudala (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Leasure drew leadoff walks and were sacrificed up a base. That was followed by a two-run single from Evans to make it 7-2 Bison. It was then Waynesburg’s turn to strike back, as a Bison error opened the door for three runs to score and trim the Bethany lead down to 7-5 after five frames.
Sophomore starter T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) retired the Jackets in order in the sixth, but gave up a leadoff single in the seventh and was lifted for Kubis. His first offering was grounded right to third for a 5-4-3 double play. Waynesburg would get another single to keep their hopes alive, but Kubis turned the tables from the first game, as he struck out Dittmar to nail down his record-breaking eighth saves, which surpassed Ian Edwards’ previous school record of seven saves set in 2005.
Evans paced Bethany’s attack at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, while Fudala had a single, stolen base and two runs scored. Zarewicz picked up the win to improve to 4-2 for the year, as he threw 6+ innings and allowed four runs on five hits and struck out two.
The Bison will be back in action on Monday with a road doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
