SAINT VINCENT OUTLASTS BISON FOR 10-9 DECISION
April 28 - BETHANY, W.Va. – After a two-run lead slipped away, the Bethany College baseball nearly rallied back but fell just short in dropping a 10-9 contest to visiting Saint Vincent Wednesday, which gave the Bearcats two out of the three games in the series.
After Saint Vincent (16-16) used an error to score once in the first, the Bison (18-14) tied the game in the last of the frame. Junior CF Tyler Dillinger (McKeesport, Pa.) hit a leadoff single, advanced to third on a pair of ground outs and scored on a two-out single by freshman 3B Brad Kubis (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell).
The Bearcats moved in front with solo tallies in the second and fourth innings, but BC started a steady stream of runs in the fourth inning. Junior RF Mike Pegg (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) stroked a two-out RBI double in the fourth and a fielder’s choice from sophomore 1B Nate Tieman (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) brought in another to tie the game at 3-3 after five innings.
The Bison grabbed the lead in the sixth inning on a two-out single by sophomore catcher T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and increased their margin to 5-3 in the seventh when Dillinger cranked a solo home run, his first of the season, to right for a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, BC’s bullpen faltered, as an error, a hit batter, two bases-loaded walks and three hits allowed SVC to score six times and move in front 9-5. The Bison were able to trim the deficit in half in the eighth inning when Zarewicz smacked a two-run homer to right, his second long ball of the season. But another Bethany error led to Saint Vincent’s fourth unearned run of the game in the top of the ninth and the visitors led 10-7 going to the bottom of the inning.
Starting the rally for Bethany in their final at-bat was Kubis, who hit a leadoff single. After a pop-up and a walk, Pegg ripped a single to right field to score Kubis and make it 10-8, although the Bison runner trying to move from first to third was gunned down for the second out. Zarewicz was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, which was followed by freshman PH Matt Paonessa (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) hitting an RBI single back up the middle that brought BC within a run at 10-9. However, the rally ended there, as Saint Vincent’s Danny Jackson got a strike out to end the game.
The Bison posted a 17-10 advantage in hits over the Bearcats, with senior Mark Cummins (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) posting a 4-for-5 effort. Pegg, who had two RBIs and two runs scored, and Dillinger, who scored three runs in addition to his solo blast, both went 3-for-5 at the plate, as did Kubis, who scored a pair.
Freshman Jack Graham (Cadiz, Ohio/Harrison Central) started and went the opening five innings, allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits. The loss went to junior Adam Nyswaner (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette), who fell to 3-1 with the decision.
Bethany will be back on the diamond and back in PAC action on Friday when they host Westminster in a doubleheader that was washed out because of rain last weekend. First pitch at Bethany Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
