Sept. 29 - RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Four members of the Bethany College cross country teams, including three females and one male, earned top 15 awards at the University of Rio Grande (Ohio) Invitational Saturday afternoon, a meet in which the Bison were the lone Division III team to compete.

Boosted by their three runners in the top 15, the BC women finished second out of five official teams, although four other schools had individuals compete. Bethany’s men placed fifth out of seven teams, with a pair of other schools unable to field complete teams.

The women’s efforts were paced by senior Chantal Stettinius (Parkton, Md./Hereford), who finished fifth overall out of 46 runners. She finished in a time of 21:08.14, just edging out Jessica Racer from Division II Charleston by .27 seconds.

Not far behind Stettinius was freshman Emily Roth (Bexley, Ohio), who crossed in ninth place with a time of 21:31.07. Rounding out Bethany’s award winners was sophomore Desiree Finley (Nanticoke, Pa./Hanover Area) in 13th place in a time of 22:11.92.

Also registering top 30 finishes for the Bison were freshman Lindsay Brewer (Wadsworth, Ohio) in 22nd, junior Laura Strassguetl (Munich, Germany/Rupprecht Gymnasium) in 24th, sophomore Alissa Moss (Washington, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) in 26th and senior Heather Moore (Washington, Pa.) in 29th.

Bethany’s second place team finish, as they totaled 50 points to finish behind only Alderson Broaddus (25), was earned without two of their top runners. Freshman Suzanne Stettinius (Parkton, Md./Hereford) missed the race due to illness and sophomore Maggie McCort (Fort Ashby, W.Va./Frankfort) sat out because of injury.

While the Bison men only had one in the top 15, many of them set personal best times during the meet. The top Bethany runner was sophomore Zach Foster (Shadyside, Ohio/Bellaire St. John’s), who took 10th place out of 74 runners with a time of 28:15.49, his fastest of the season. It’s his third top 12 finish of the season to go along with his fifth place showing at Westminster (Sept. 1) and 12th place running at Marietta (Sept. 15).

One other Bison runner placed in the top half, as freshman Clifford Arbogast (Cameron, W.Va.) crossed in 32nd place (29:45.38), while junior Matt Schlemmer (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak) narrowly missed out by taking 39th (30:43.44).

Bethany’s teams will take next week off before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) University Invitational, which will be held in Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park.
