Bison Place Two on All-PAC Teams at Conference Championships
Oct. 27 -BETHANY, W.Va. – A pair of Bethany College freshmen continued strong first seasons by earning Honorable Mention All-PAC status during the 2012 PAC Cross Country Championships, hosted by Bethany Saturday.
Both Bison teams finished ninth in the conference standings. On the men’s side, Washington & Jefferson’s Scott Ryan was the individual winner and Saint Vincent won its third consecutive team championship. For the women, W&J made it a sweep when Kristen Galligan took first place and Grove City captured the overall women’s crown for the 24th consecutive season.
The top runner for the Bison overall was freshman Ryan Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills). He earned 16th place overall by crossing in a time of 27:53. This is the second time in the last three years a BC freshman has earned all-conference recognition, as Donnelly (right) joins Cory Yarrington (Berkeley Springs, W.Va.), who was All-PAC in 2010, to earn a spot among the league’s top runners. Yarrington also earned All-PAC last year before missing this season due to injury.
Bethany nearly placed a second runner on the All-PAC teams. Sophomore Cody McDonald (Martinsburg, W.Va./Musselman) finished 25th overall, four spots out of all-conference honors, with a time of 28:23.7.
Three other freshmen ran for the Bison Saturday, as did one upperclassman. Junior Hunter Ankrom (Moundsville, W.Va./John Marshall), who missed all of last season and most of this year due to injury, toughed out a difficult day on the course due to the weather conditions. Finishing ahead of Ankrom by five spots was freshman Brenton Nutter (Zanesville, Ohio), while freshmen Chris Troyer (Gnadenhutten, Ohio/Indian Valley) and Will Farkas-Worthy (Elkview, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) completed the list of Bison who ran on Saturday.
The Bethany women were led by freshman Brooke Bosworth (right - St. Clairsville, Ohio) with another good effort. She crossed the finish line in a time of 24:46.50 to claim 20th place overall and a spot on the Honorable Mention All-PAC squad. It’s the second consecutive season a Bison freshman has been on the All-PAC teams.
Finishing second for the Bison was sophomore Jessica Olson (Moon, Pa.). On Saturday, she finished in the middle of a pack of runners to score 40th place with a time of 25:56.90. The next group of Bethany runners also finished in a tight grouping in the final results, as freshman Gabri Bonazzo (Gassaway, W.Va./Braxton), freshman Kelsea Martz (Hedgesville, W.Va.), junior Emily King (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Washington) and junior Chelesi White (Elkins, W.Va.) were four in a grouping of nine runners.
Rounding out the Bethany contingent on Saturday was senior Katrina Miller (Avella, Pa.), sophomore Rebekah Hudock (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and junior Alisa Van Syckle (Germany/Friedrich-List Gymnasium).
Bethany will complete the season in two weeks when its runs at the NCAA Mid-East Regional Invitational at Dickinson University in Carlisle, Pa., on Nov. 10.
