Oct. 27 - LATROBE, Pa. – Sophomore Zach Foster (Shadyside, Ohio/Bellaire St. John’s) earned Second Team All-PAC honors Saturday, as the Bethany College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the 2007 PAC Championships at Saint Vincent (Pa.) College.
Despite Foster’s showing, the Bison men finished in sixth place overall with 140 points, just behind Waynesburg (Pa.) University (136). Bethany’s women took fifth place overall, as they scored 113 to fall behind Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College (82) and Westminster (Pa.) College (99).
Grove City (Pa.) College swept both team titles for the 18th consecutive season and also had the women’s individual champion in Kristen Carter. The men’s individual winner was Matthew Rudzki from W&J, although Adam Smith from Saint Vincent (Pa.) College actually took first but SVC and Geneva (Pa.) College are not eligible for team or individual awards as they are NCAA Division III provisional members.
Foster finished with Second Team All-PAC honors after his ninth place finish, as the top seven runners receive First Team distinction and the next seven garner Second Team. He broke the tape in 28:21, just four seconds behind Grove City’s Joey Cortez for eighth place.
Bethany’s other four runners who scored included freshman Clifford Arbogast (Cameron, W.Va.), who was 24th, junior Matt Schlemmer (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak), who finished 28th, sophomore Patrick Miller (Canonsburg, Pa./Chartiers-Houston), who took 39th, and freshman Benjamin Heid (Heidelberg, Germany), who was 40th.
The women’s team nearly had an All-PAC honoree in sophomore Desiree Finley (Nanticoke, Pa./Hanover Area), who placed 15th with a time of 26:18 to miss all-conference honors by one spot. Placing 14th to grab the final all-league award was Waynesburg’s Haley Hinds with a time of a 25:53.
Finley led a trio of BC competitors who made a run at All-PAC honors. Freshman Suzanne Stettinius (Parkton, Md./Hereford) placed 18th with a time of 26:33, while her sister, senior Chantal Stettinius (Parkton, Md./Hereford), earned 19th by finishing in 26:47.
The final two runners to score for Bethany, who ran without freshman Emily Roth (Bexley, Ohio) and sophomore Maggie McCort (Fort Ashby, W.Va./Frankfort) because of injuries, were senior Heather Moore (Washington, Pa.) in 31st place and freshman Lindsay Brewer (Wadsworth, Ohio) in 32nd.
Bethany will now take a week off from competition before their next scheduled meet, which will be Nov. 10. Head coach Mark Swiger will take some of the Bison to the NCAA MidEast Regional Championship meet that day, which will be held in Allentown, Pa.
