Freshmen Highlight Bison’s Opening Meet at Seton Hill
Sept. 1 - GREENSBURG, Pa. –A pair of freshmen runners in their first collegiate meet finished as the top runners for the Bethany College men’s and women’s cross country teams Saturday at the Seton Hill Invitational.
As one of the only Division III schools running at the invitational, the Bison women finished in front of Penn State-Altoona and Glenville State to rank seventh out of nine teams. The men’s side saw Bethany take fifth out of six programs, placing just ahead of Glenville State.
Freshman Brooke Bosworth (St. Clairsville, Ohio) not only led the Bethany contingent, but she was also the top Division III runner in the field Saturday. She completed the 5K course with a time of 22:28.82 to earn 26th place out of 85 teams. Two other BC runners just missed placing in the top half of the standings, as junior Heather Hamm (Milton, Vt./BFA Fairfax) was 43rd and sophomore Jessica Olson (Moon, Pa.) crossed in 45th.
Bison freshman Ryan Donnelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) was also the top non-scholarship runner to come across the finish line, but it didn’t come easy. Donnelly’s time for the 8K course was 30:54.25, which was less than a second in front of the top runner from Penn State-Altoona. That effort also placed him 19th overall out of 56 competitors.
Coming in next for Bethany was sophomore Cody McDonald (Martinsburg, W.Va./Mussleman), who finished 26th, and freshman Brenton Nutter (Zanesville, Ohio), who was 38th overall.
The Bison will be in action again next Saturday, as they compete at the Waynesburg Invitational.
