Oct. 3 – RICHMOND, Ind. – The Bethany College field hockey team defeated Earlham College 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The victory marks the largest win-total the field hockey program has had in a single season since the program reboot in 2012.
The Bison (5-7) stormed out to a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute of the contest. Sophomore Bailey Boardman (La Verne, Calif./Bonita) beat the Earlham (3-6) goalkeeper to give the Bison an early advantage.
The Quaker offense continued to put the pressure on, totaling 10 shots in the first half. The Bison defense stepped up and held Earlham scoreless in the period.
Boardman extended the Bison lead to 2-0 as she took a pass from senior T.J. Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Springbrook) and found the back of the net again in the 55th minute. It was Boardman’s first multi-goal game on the year and the second of her career.
With just 10 minutes remaining and up two goals, the Bison were poised to take home the easy win. Earlham College had other ideas as the Quakers got on the board with a score in the 61st minute.
The Bison saw their promising lead erased in the 68th minute as Kaitlyn Brunner netted a goal to tie the game at 2-2.
Bethany came back with a quick response and forced a Quaker penalty in the 70th minute. An ensuing handball in the circle gave Bethany a penalty shot for the win. Freshman Sierra Cuellar (Aberdeen, Md./Abderdeen) got the nod from head coach Kylie Hrehor, and the freshman defender fired one past the goaltender for a 3-2 victory.
Boardman led the offensive attack for the Bison, recording five shots. Bethany totaled nine shots in the contest.
Senior goaltender Courtney Snyder (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) earned the win for the Bison. Snyder collected a save and came up with some big plays defensively.
The Bison will be back in action on Tuesday, October 6 when they welcome Oberlin College to Bison Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
