Sept. 5 – BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College Bison field hockey team grabbed their first triumph of the season, defeating Wilson College, 2-0. The victory also marks the first under new head coach Kylie Hrehor and the program’s first shutout since returning in 2011.
"I am so proud of the way they persevered tonight," commented Hrehor. "They are beginning to work as one unit and as we continue to accomplish small goals, the larger ones will follow."
The Bison got the action going quickly, taking a 1-0 advantage in the 6th minute of play. Bethany executed a perfect corner play, as sophomore Latisha Cuffee (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) found the back of the net on a great pass from junior Courtney Gill (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional).
That would be the only score of the first half, as the Bison entered intermission with the 1-0 advantage.
Bethany’s offense was aggressive in the first stanza, registering three shots and four corners.
The second half saw both teams play great defense until the 55th minute of action when the Green & White would tack on another goal, taking a 2-0 lead. Gill was the star this time, finding the sweet spot for the games’ second score.
Bethany would then continue to play great defense and hold on for the 2-0 win.
Leading the way for the Bison offense was Gill and Cuffee. Gill notched three points (goal & assist), while Cuffee scored her first goal of the young season. Junior Taylor Solomon (Beltsville, Md./Elizabeth Seton) also did well, registering three shots with two coming on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffany McCary (Hanover Township, Pa./Hanover) also had an outstanding night as she notched her first-career shutout as a member of the Bison. She finished with two saves on three faced shots.
The Bison will hit the field next on Saturday, September 13, as the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University come to town. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m.
