May 1 - BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College football team has set their 2008 schedule, which includes five road games and five home contests, including four match-ups with Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opponents.
The season will open on the road at Otterbein (Ohio) College Sat., Sept. 6 at 1:30 p.m. It will be the first-ever match-up between the Bison and Cardinals, who finished 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) in 2007.
The Bison’s home opener will come the following week on Sept. 13 when they host Kentucky Christian University at 1 p.m. The 2008 season will be the first official campaign for the Knights, who will play an independent NAIA schedule next year.
“We're excited about adding the two new non-conference opponents,” said Bethany head coach Tim Weaver, who will be entering his third season on the Bison sidelines next fall. “Otterbein is a very good team in a very good league, and we want to start challenging ourselves against that type of competition. Kentucky Christian hired a very successful coach to start football there and they appear to be committed to building a quality program.”
Bethany’s PAC opener will be Sept. 20 when they travel to Grove City for a 7 p.m. start. Following a bye week, BC will host Thomas More on Oct. 4 in a 2 p.m. Homecoming kickoff. Bethany defeated Thomas More 35-14 last year at Bethany Field for their second straight victory over the Saints.
The next two weeks will see Bethany hit the road for trips to northern PAC schools. The Bison’s Oct. 11 contest will be at Thiel in a 1:30 kickoff, while the Green and White will journey to Westminster Oct. 20 to battle the Titans. Kickoff for that game has not been set.
The Bison will close out October and begin November with home games, as they host Waynesburg on Oct. 25 and take on invading Geneva Nov. 1. Geneva defeated Bethany 28-13 last season in the first meeting between the teams since 1983, which was the last time the Golden Tornadoes played at BC.
Bethany’s year will conclude with a road game at defending conference champion Washington & Jefferson Nov. 8 at 1:30 p.m. and a home tilt with Saint Vincent Nov. 15. The Bison had school records set against both teams in 2007, as BC lost a 77-39 contest at W&J to set a new mark for combined points in a game.
Against Saint Vincent, BC rolled up a school-record 482 rushing yards and 739 total yards in a 66-7 victory over the Bearcats, who were in their first year of varsity football since 1962.
“The change by the PAC to playing all of our conference games after the second weekend should improve the quality of play in our league games and raise the excitement for the start of conference competition,” said Weaver, who is 8-12 in two years as the Bison coach, which includes four conference victories.
