July 31 - LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College football program was picked to finish sixth overall according to the preseason poll released Tuesday afternoon at the 2007 Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Football Media Day, which was held at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
The Bison, who finished 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference, tallied 68 points to finish one point ahead of Westminster (Pa.) College (67). Defending PAC champion Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College earned 22 first place votes and 196 total points to earn the nod as the preseason favorite. With four first place votes and 148 points was Waynesburg (Pa.) College, narrowly ahead of Thiel (Pa.) College garnered three first place votes and 147 points.
Rounding out the poll was Thomas More (Ky.) College with 115 points and Grove City (Pa.) College with 73.
According to second-year Bison head coach Tim Weaver, whose team finished tied with Thomas More for fourth place in the league a year ago, this prediction is about where he figured his team would place.
“I think it’s a fair assessment, especially considering what we have returning and what we lost offensively from last year” said Weaver. “Our job is to improve our running game and stopping the run, but it also comes down to consistently playing our best every week.”
The Bison open the 2007 season Sept. 8 at Hiram (Ohio) College, with their home opener against first-year program Saint Vincent (Pa.) College on Sept. 15 at 1:30 p.m.
