September 17 - Bethany College junior John Gyure (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood) has been recognized as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week for September 13.

It was only one of three laurels Gyure received, as he was named the ECAC Southwest Region Defensive Player of the Week and also claimed a spot on’s national Team of the Week, which was announced early Wednesday.

The 6-1, 235-pound defensive lineman earned the awards by racking up a career-high 10 tackles and leading the Bison to a 34-19 win at home against Kentucky Christian on Saturday. He posted 3.5 tackles for a loss, including two quarterback sacks, and a forced fumble to extend Bethany’s home opener winning streak to four. He was a major part in holding the Knights to a paltry 2.7 rushing yards per carry.

Bethany head coach Tim Weaver said he is happy to see Gyure playing the way he did as a freshman, when he earned Honorable Mention All-PAC.

“It’s good to have John back performing at the level he played as a freshman,” said Weaver. “We pushed him in camp to become a productive player again and he stepped up in a big way against an athletic team.”

A psychology major, Gyure is the son of John and Anne Gyure of Brentwood, Pa.
