BETHANY, W.Va. – Bethany College is hosting football and band camps for the 74th annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game.

Bethany College Athletic Director Steve Thompson welcomed the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference to the campus during a news conference on July 22.

“We love being part of this event, and we look forward to hosting it far into the future,” Thompson said.

Bethany has hosted the OVAC camp since 2011.

The Ohio Valley Athletic Conference comprises 52 schools in Ohio and West Virginia, making it the largest high school athletic conference in the United States.

OVAC Executive Director Dirk DeCoy stressed the importance of the annual All-Star game for exposing students to a college campus and for fostering friendships among rivals.

“It brings a lot of our student athletes and former student athletes together,” DeCoy said.

The All-Star teams, featuring 30 players from West Virginia and 32 from Ohio, reported to camp at Bethany on July 21.

The West Virginia team is coached by Mike Eddy, of Parkersburg South High School, and the Ohio team by Andrew Connor, of Indian Creek.

The West Virginia roster includes two athletes who are expected to play for the Bison football team in the fall: Jermain Snodgrass and Devaughn McWhorter, both representing Wheeling Park High School.

The McDonald’s All-Star Band is expected to report to the campus July 23. The band is made up of more than 120 musicians from 16 OVAC high schools. Ben McPherson is the band coordinator.

A pep rally is set for 6:30 p.m. July 26 at Bethany’s Bison Field. The free community event features introductions of the football teams, band, cheerleaders and Queen of Queen pageant participants and the announcements of the Rudy Mumley Memorial and Ron Mauck Scholar Athlete scholarships. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The 74th annual OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game kicks off at 7:15 p.m. July 27 at Wheeling Island Stadium.
